Given the single digit temps tomorrow even on a 2 or 3 hour delay, Marion County Schools will have Snow Day #6 Wednesday, January 22, 2025. This will convert the first available day of Friday, April 25, 2025 to an instructional day. This will maximize instruction prior to testing windows. Restrictions regarding extracurriculars will be made by 11 AM tomorrow and conveyed to principals.

Marion County Schools is closed for Tuesday , Jan. 21, 2025. This is Snow Day #5 for staff and students. There will be no extracurriculars for Jan. 21, 2025. Decisions about extra curriculars for the rest of the week will be made on a day-to-day basis by 11 AM and communicated to principals.

In observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Marion County Schools is closed today, January 20, 2025. In 1983, President Ronald Reagan signed the federal holiday into law.

Marion County Schools will have Climate Control Day #5 of 5 on Thur. Jan. 16, 2025. Staff, excluding 261-day, will report to work location 2 hours later than normal report time this day. Teachers are available via phone or Internet and can participate in professional learning and meetings. Climate Control Days" are considered non-traditional instructional days and can be called for weather. Schools have provided instructional materials in advance of a Climate Control Days. Schools may utilize Google Classroom to make materials available. Extra-curricular activities will be permitted on their regular schedule. Restrictions may apply as determined by 11 AM. No practices or games prior to the end of the school day. Students will have 2 days upon return to school to submit work. Students are offered a meal between the hours of 10:30 to 12:30 at each school.

The eighteenth annual SMART529 “When I Grow Up” essay contest is open to children from Kindergarten through Fifth grade. The essay contest runs through February 28, 2025. Students may submit electronically (www.SMART529.com/studententry) or mail in paper entry forms. Parents or guardians must give their student permission to enter. Entries may be submitted individually or by classroom/school. Attached you will find an informative memo for school staff.
Schools with K-Fifth grade students should receive paper student entry forms by the second week of January. Please ask the principals in your county to distribute the essay contest forms to students. The essay contest may help teachers fulfill part of the Economics content standard.
Fifteen regional winners will be chosen. Each winner will be awarded a $500 SMART529 higher education savings account. The school of each regional winner will also receive a $500 cash prize. A grand prize winner will be chosen at random during an awards ceremony. The grand prize winner will receive an additional $4,500 in his or her savings account.
A Teacher’s essay contest will also be held in conjunction with the student contest. To enter, Kindergarten through Fifth grade teachers (including counselors and librarians) tell us how they use the essay contest in their classroom. Details can be found at www.SMART529.com/teacherentry.

WV Prevention Solutions has partnered with Orion Strategies to conduct an assessment of after school/outside of school activities in the region. The assessments will be in the form of locally hosted parent town halls. This is to gain insight about youth participation (or not) in these activities. As of December 31st, 14.0% of West Virginia high school seniors have completed a FAFSA. WV has established a FAFSA Completion goal of 60 percent of 12th grade students who will complete a FAFSA by April 15, 2025. Financial aid is a crucial part of helping students pay for post-secondary training.
