2025 Student Applications Now Open and due to Marion County Schools March 21, 2025. The West Virginia Department of Education is pleased to announce the West Virginia Governor’s Schools student applications are now available. Please visit our website to learn about these exciting opportunities for students in middle and high schools and to access the applications. We need assistance from teachers, counselors, and school administration to get this information to students and parents. These FREE summer residential programs offer incredible experiences for students in a variety of disciplines. The George W. Longenecker Memorial Scholarship Application
The West Virginia Nursery and Landscape Association offers a scholarship in the amount full-tuition reimburse for two years to graduating West Virginia high school seniors accepted in the Horticulture or Landscape Architecture Programs at West Virginia University’s Davis College for Arts and Sciences.
Recipients will receive full tuition reimbursement for four semesters while maintaining a cumulative 3.0 GPA with full credits in either the Landscape Architecture or Horticultural Programs. WVNLA will check in with the scholarship recipient each semester to ensure the student has maintained at least a 3.0 GPA and is still enrolled in the Landscape Architecture or Horticultural programs. Recipients who do not maintain a 3.0 GPA will not be eligible to receive further scholarship funds until their cumulative GPA meets the 3.0 requirement. This scholarship is only available for the student's first four semesters.
Applicants must meet the following qualifications/requirements: be a West Virginia resident; be a high school senior accepted into West Virginia University’s Landscape Architecture or Horticulture programs OR any in-state resident student entering/accepted into his or her first year of WVU Landscape Architecture or Horticulture program; and have a high school GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Applicant must complete an online application and submit an essay stating his or her interest in Landscape Architecture or Ornamental Horticulture and why it he or she feels the development of future professionals in the nursery and landscape design industry is important to the state of West Virginia. Scholarship applications will also be scrutinized based on:
• an understanding of the major and profession,
• how the industry benefits the state of West Virginia,
• what career they hope to follow after graduation,
• how the major could be applied in their current community;
• and any work or study experience the applicant has in the green industry.
Students should be aware that the use of Artificial Intelligence in writing the essay is strongly discouraged and that the essay will be subject to AI-discerning software. The deadline to apply is March 15. Semifinalists may be scheduled for a Zoom interview with scholarship committee members.

George Longenecker dedicated a lifetime to the study and mentorship of landscape architecture. George was instrumental in developing the landscape architecture program at West Virginia University, where he was beloved by his students and fellow faculty members for his personality and knowledge of plant materials. He founded and led the effort to organize and establish the West Virginia Botanic Garden in Morgantown. For 35 years, George served as an advisor for the Pennsylvania Conservancy-sponsored summer landscape architecture internship program for the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Fallingwater in Mill Run, PA.

Tune In! the Board of Education and Superintendent Dr. Heston honor some of the winners of the Marion County Schools Science Fair at today's meeting. They will represent Marion County Schools later this month at the Regional Science Fair, hosted by Fairmont State University.











Marion County Schools will have Climate Control Day #3 on Friday, Jan. 10, 2025.
Staff, excluding 261-day, will report to work location 2 hours later than normal report time this day.
Teachers are available via phone or Internet and can participate in professional learning and meetings.
Climate Control Days" are considered non-traditional instructional days and can be called for weather.
Schools have provided instructional materials in advance of a Climate Control Days. Schools may utilize Google Classroom to make materials available.
Extra-curricular activities will be permitted on their regular schedule. No practices or games prior to the end of the school day.
Students will have 2 days upon return to school to submit work.
Students are offered a meal between the hours of 10:30 to 12:30 at each school.

The 2025 student application for the West Virginia Governor’s School for the Arts is now open for all theater, creative writing, dance, instrumental music, studio art, vocal, and digital media teachers and students. Student must be currently in 10th grade to apply. The application requires an audition, which is found in Part II of the application. The deadline to apply is February 28, 2025.
